Milo came to GPA Northwest with a
noticeable limp in his front leg. After testing at an orthopedic
specialist, he was diagnosed with Coccidia Mycosis, called Valley
Fever in humans, this is a serious fungal disease that affects dogs
joints and bones as well as other organs. Milo had severe pain from
the damage to his front leg bone and is being treated with a special
medication for the fungal disease. His prognosis is good but he needed specialized care for some
time in the GPA Northwest Special Needs Program.

Because the disease affects the bones and the
lungs in dogs, Milo had extensive x-rays of his chest and
affected leg. His lungs are clear of any evidence of the fungus,
which is a good sign for his recovery. It is now possible, with
advances in treatment, for dogs with Coccidia Mycosis to recover and
live pain-free lives. He may need to be on the anti fungal
medication for the rest of his life but it's side effects can be
minimal and he is tolerating the medication well at this time. Milo
will go back for checkups with the internal medicine specialist regularly
to monitor the effectiveness of his treatment.
Milo has been doing very well with his treatment and continues to be happy and free of pain from the disease. He is taking it easy in his foster home and enjoys the companionship of the other Greyhounds there as well as the attention of the foster parents he now has.
