Angel is a beautiful one-year-old red fawn female who came to GPA-NW from GPA-Emerald Coast in Pensacola, Florida. Angel had suffered a broken left front leg in the past few months and was not suitable for being transported over land.
Due to the devastation of the hurricanes in Florida this fall, many adoption facilities were destroyed and foster homes suffered damage making them unsafe, leaving hundreds of dogs who were safely evacuated during the actual storms no where to return to afterward. Many dog hauls have taken place in recent weeks to move the abundance of dogs in Florida to other states for adoption. A member of GPA-Emerald Coast who is also a Delta flight attendant was able to arrange to fly both Angel and her traveling mate, Buster (a four-month old with a broken leg) to Portland at a reduced cost.

Angel has been evaluated by an orthopedic surgeon and it has been determined that while the break itself would heal sufficiently, the resulting angles in her ankle will continue to deteriorate and need to be corrected. Angel had surgery on December 1st to have this condition corrected so that she will be able to lead a full, active life. Her recovery will take at least 2 months in an external fixation, which will be managed in her foster home.

Angel has begun the process of adjusting her leg bone back into the proper position. She has a device attached to the bones that allow minute adjustments four times each day. This process will take about a month to move the bones into alignment.
After that she will be in a stabile position for another month until the bone completely heals. She is having physical therapy four times each day to ensure that the muscles and tendons don't atrophy. She is becoming more sweet and friendly each day and seems to understand that the people around her now are caring for her and protecting her.
Angel is a demure small female who is a little shy on first meetings. She is very curious about her environment and every once in a while this little sweetheart will burst into the most jubilant puppy play. Angel gets along fine with other greyhounds, other breeds of dogs and with cats.
Angel will have x-rays taken on February 7 after which the external fixation will be removed. Angel has been fortunate enough to find a loving family who has been anxiously awaiting her arrival in her new home. As soon as Angel has recovered from the removal of the fixation she will move to her new home.
Angel went to live in her home-for-life this week and at a mere 50 pounds, she will live with a big brother greyhound who weighs 91 pounds! Angel will continue her physical therapy in her new home so that she can regain strength and mobility in her injured leg.
