Independence Day For Tucson Greyhounds
July 6, 2007 - Portland Oregon
Greyhound Pets of America Northwest
Greyhound Pets of America Northwest confirmed today that the first
group of 24 retired racing Greyhounds would leave the Tucson Arizona
racetrack this week bound for Portland and their new lives as pets.
As many as 280 Greyhounds have been held in kennels at the
temporarily closed Tucson racetrack, some for many months, waiting
to be released to adoption groups. This enormous build up of dogs
waiting to move into adoption programs will be difficult to absorb
quickly but the dedicated volunteers of Greyhound Pets of America
Northwest here in Portland and other Greyhound adoption
organizations throughout the USA will do their best to take these
dogs from racetrack to homes as fast as possible.
"We appreciate all the help we can get in finding good homes for
these Tucson dogs," said an official of the Greyhound Pets of
America National organization, "For people who can't adopt but want
to help, we would be grateful for any donations to help with medical
care, food and transportation for these Greyhounds."
Greyhound Pets of America Northwest (GPA Northwest) in Portland
Oregon will welcome 24 of these retiring Greyhounds into their
adoption program the first week of July when they arrive from
Tucson. As a part of their ongoing effort to help as many Greyhounds
find loving homes as possible, regardless of their origin, GPA
Northwest has made the commitment to these Greyhounds and to the
national adoption program coordinated by GPA. As soon as
transportation can be arranged, more Greyhounds will be brought from
Tucson to Portland to join the GPA Northwest adoption program.
Being able to find homes for an additional 35 Greyhounds in the next
two to three months will be challenging but our volunteers will rise
to the challenge as they always do when the Greyhounds are in need,
said Jackie Holstrom GPA Northwest chapter president.
GPA Northwest is seeking volunteers who can temporarily open their
home to one of these dogs for a short time to act as a foster home
and to provide the love and care that every retiring Greyhound
deserves. In addition to foster homes, GPA Northwest is seeking
supporters to donate generously to help pay for the care of these
and all of the Greyhounds in the GPA Northwest adoption program.
