Greyhound Adoption On the Rise
July 7, 2006 - Portland Oregon
Greyhound Pets of America Northwest
Greyhound Pets of America Northwest announced today that their
adoption of Greyhounds in Oregon and Southern Washington is on the
rise. Recent expansion of their outreach programs and a renewed
commitment from GPA Northwest volunteers has lead to more Greyhounds
being placed into adoptive homes.
The most recent milestone was reached for the group as over half of
the Greyhounds brought from the closing Juarez Mexico racetrack were
adopted into their new homes. Those lucky enough to reach GPA
Northwest are all finding homes and being cared for in foster homes.
"We were happy to help support the national effort to help the
Juarez Greyhounds, said Jackie Holstrom, president of GPA Northwest,
we actually placed one of those dogs into his home within a few days
of arrival". In addition to the Juarez Greyhounds, several other
dogs from throughout the country, including Oklahoma, Arizona,
Florida and Oregon were adopted in recent weeks. Just as the last
group of hounds moves on to permanent homes more Greyhounds are
already preparing to travel to GPA Northwest to begin their
retirement .
As the weather warms up in Oregon and Washington you can expect to
see more Greyhounds out and about at GPA Northwest adoption events
and with their proud owners walking the streets. The summer is a
busy time for the group, with visits to outlying cities throughout
Oregon and Southern Washington. The success of the groups Make A
Fast Friend campaign is apparent when you surf their website at
www.gpa-nw.org and see the
number of Adoption events scheduled for the next few months.
All the thanks for helping the Juarez Greyhounds, and all of the
Greyhounds in the GPA Northwest program, go to their dedicated
volunteers. GPA Northwest is 100% volunteer operated with no one
receiving pay for their work. All of the proceeds from adoptions,
special events and public contributions go directly to help the
Greyhounds. "It's a lot of hard work but we do this for the dogs we
love, said Anne Soeder, Vice President of the Northwest chapter, you
can't put a price on what our volunteers do."
The mission of Greyhound Pets of America-Northwest is to locate
responsible, loving homes for greyhounds that fail to qualify or no
longer qualify for the racetrack and to educate the public about the
greyhounds, stressing their desirability as pets.
GPA-NW is a non-profit corporation and tax-exempt organization. It
is a chapter of Greyhound Pets of America, a national network of
Greyhound adoption groups. GPA-NW is staffed entirely by unpaid
volunteers; all donations and other revenues are dedicated entirely
to supporting its Greyhound adoption program.
GPA-NW welcomes volunteers from all walks of life, regardless of
whether they have adopted a Greyhound. All that is required is a
love of animals, and a willingness to work.
