The Greyhound Pet Adoption Northwest Sponsorship program cares for
Senior Greyhounds and Special Needs Greyhounds that are older or
have complicated medical conditions. Because these Greyhounds
require extra care, their stay in our foster homes may be longer
than most. We accept any Greyhound in need, whether the dog was
originally placed by Greyhound Pet Adoption Northwest or not.
Greyhound Pet Adoption Northwest accepts into its foster program any dog with an
injury, disease or just old age. This arrangement has enabled these
Greyhounds to get the special monitoring they need to find the
appropriate medical treatment for each dog. If a senior aged
Greyhound does not find an adoptive home, we will care for that dog
for the rest of it's life in a loving foster home. Every Greyhound
in our program is treated with love, caring and the best medical
attention available.
We know that not everyone is able to adopt or foster a Greyhound but
you can still help these beautiful creatures. You can become a
sponsor for the special dogs in our foster program. Sponsor a
Greyhound for yourself or in someone else's name as a gift or
memorial. Sponsorship can be rewarding for birthdays, anniversaries,
school classrooms, retirement home residents and others who can't
adopt their own Greyhound but want to be a part of our effort.
You CAN and WILL make a difference in the life of a Greyhound in
need of special care. Your help and support will make a difference .
. . one Greyhound at a time.

Big Girl collided with another dog while running. She suffered from a torn cruciate ligament in her rear knee, which caused her a lot of pain and made it impossible for her to walk on that leg. In a very unusual surgery for a Greyhound, a TPLO surgery was performed by Dr. Petra Ost of VCA Southeast Portland Animal Hospital to reconfigure the bone in her knee so that the ligament could be repaired successfully. The surgery is common in other breeds but rare for a Greyhound since they have such strong and well-formed structures. The surgery was a success and Big Girl is well into her recovery and rehabilitation. She should recover fully and have full use of her leg without pain. She can't race but she can be a very happy companion for someone looking for a loving dog.

Rambo became very overweight in his first home and then he had seizures. He was taken to the veterinarian where he was treated for the seizures. He was no longer able to stay with his first adopters so Rambo returned to GPA Northwest. He was seen by a neurologist and placed on medication to control his seizures. So far, Rambo has been doing well and has not had any more seizures.
We do not know what caused Rambo's seizures but there are many possibilities. The testing is expensive and can be inconclusive so he is currently being treated with anti-seizure medications and a reduced diet so he can lose weight. Many dogs with seizure disorder live normal lives with few or occasional seizures. At some point, we may be able to pursue additional testing for Rambo such as an MRI and spinal tap.

Ziggy never raced. He was released to GPA Northwest when he was a puppy because he was too small to compete. He is a very loving dog but doesn't know he is a racing Greyhound, he just thinks he's a dog.
Ziggy developed anxiety over time and has been diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, which means he is easily frightened by things like thunder and other loud noises. He has been on anti-anxiety medication for several weeks now and is doing great. He no longer gets anxious or afraid when he hears loud noises or thunder. He is a sensitive little guy and needs a home that is mostly quiet where he can just be a loved companion and play in his yard.
